İslam Tarihinde Hulefa-yi Râşidin döneminden sonra yönetime geçen Ümeyye oğulları, Emeniler devleti denilen ve yaklaşık bir asır süren bir devlet kurmuşlardır. Devletin kurucusu ve ilk halifesi Muaviye b. Ebi Süfyan’ın dedelerinden Ümeyye’ye nispetle bu devlete de Emevî devleti denilmiştir. Emevîler dönemi (661-750), İslam’ın ilk hanedan devleti olarak bilinir. Muaviye bin Ebu Süfyan tarafından kurulan Emevî Devleti, merkezi Şam olan geniş bir imparatorluk haline gelmiştir. Emevîler, Arapçayı resmi dil yapmış ve ilk İslam parasını bastırmışlardır. Ayrıca, Kuzey Afrika, İspanya ve Orta Asya’ya kadar genişlemişlerdir. Benzer şekilde. Afrika'nın kuzeyine geçerek başta İspanya olmak üzere ta, Fransa’ya kadar olan bölgelerin fethini gerçekleştirenler de yine aynı aileden kimselerdir. Burada kurulan Endülüs Emevî devleti 1031 yılına kadar devam etmiş, daha sonra da yerine Osmanlı'daki beyliklere benzeyen. İrili ufaklı devletler kurulmuş, bunlar da varlığını 1492 yılına kadar devam ettirmişlerdir. Böylece İslamiyet bu dönemde bir taraftan Afrika'nın tamamı ve İberya yarımadası diğer taraftan Orta Asya’da Hindistan ve Çin sınırlarına kadar ulaştırılmıştır.Emevîlerden sonra bir ihtilalle yönetime geçen Abbasiler (750-1258), Irak merkezli bir devleti yönetmişlerdir. Abbasiler, bilim, kültür ve ticarette büyük ilerlemeler kaydetmişlerdir. Bu dönemde Beytü’l-Hikme gibi ilim merkezleri kurulmuş ve İslam dünyası, bilimsel ve kültürel bir altın çağa girmiştir. Abbasiler, ayrıca ticaret yollarını kontrol ederek ekonomik güçlerini artırmışlardır. Abbasiler mevali gruplara değer vermişler ve onların destekleriyle üç kıtada asırlar boyu söz sahibi olmuşlardır.İslam medeniyetinde sadece siyasi ve askeri olaylar gerçekleşmemiş, günümüze kadar varlığını devam ettiren güçlü bir medeniyetin inşası için pek çok alanda adımlar atılmıştır. İslam Medeniyeti diğer medeniyetlerden faydalı gördüğü unsurları aldığı gibi başka medeniyetleri de etkilemiştir. Bu medeniyetin en orijinal tarafı ise Vahiy ve akıl merkezli oluşu ile tevhidi esas almasıdır. İlaveten bu medeniyet hem dünya hem de ahiret dengesini korumayı esas almış, böylece kendine özgü bir medeniyet haline gelmiştir. İslam medeniyetinde siyasi ve askeri gelişmelerin yanında sosyal, ekonomik, ilmi, askeri ve adli kurumlar da büyük önem taşır. Sosyal kurumlar, zekat ve vakıf sistemleriyle toplumsal dayanışmayı sağlamıştır. Ekonomik kurumlar, ticaret yolları ve pazarlar aracılığıyla ekonomik büyümeyi desteklemiştir. İlmi kurumlar, medreseler ve kütüphaneler aracılığıyla bilginin yayılmasını sağlamıştır. Askeri kurumlar, fetihler ve savunma için güçlü ordular oluşturmuştur. Adli kurumlar ise, şeriat mahkemeleri ve kadılar aracılığıyla adaletin sağlanmasında önemli rol oynamıştır.
